Makerspace Programs

Makerspace programs have limited registration and often fill up quickly.

Most programs can be offered as a one-on-one booking or to small groups.

Current Programs

The Needlework Group with the Makerspace is a place and time to gather, work on independent projects, socialize, and support each other. Knitting, crochet, and cross-stich welcome. No formal teaching is being provided.

Needlework Group will meet:
First Tuesday of the month 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. (drop-in)
First Wednesday of the month 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (drop-in)

March Dates:
Tuesday, March 3: 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

SPL Makerspace - 1 Bridge Street, Lakefield

slate coasters

During this 2-hour class, you will learn how to create a design that will be engraved onto slate coasters. Each person will get 4 coasters.

Cost: $20 collected at the end of class

Learn how to scan your slides and negatives then transfer and save them onto a USB/external memory. Following class, participants can book individual time to start their personal digitizing projects.

Create a wall-hanging for any room in the house using beautiful fabric samples and HTV vinyl. During this 2-hour class participants will learn how to create designs in Cricut Design Space, how to cut vinyl with the Cricut Maker, and how to press vinyl onto fabric.

Register for Wall Hanging

Kenzie from Happy Twigs will be joining us at the SPL Makerspace for the first time, and we couldn't be more excited! During this 3-hour class each participant will choose a hat from a large selection styles and colours. Kenzie will walk participants through the process of using a wood burner to add a design to the hat. Participants will finish the class by adding embellishments to the hat such as charms, ribbons, feathers, etc.

During the week of March Break, we encourage families and friends to book time together in the Makerspace. Connect with Makerspace staff to discuss a project that your group is interested in making. We will book you a time fully supported by staff and volunteers to successfully complete your project.

Calling all crafty kids who are interested in learning about the laser machine and turning personal artwork into a book cover. During our two-hour class, everyone will start with paper and marker to draw their masterpiece. Artwork is then scanned into digital form. Finally, learn how the laser works as it engraves the artwork into a wooden book cover. Finish by assembling your notebook (136-page spiral notebook included). Children can be supported by a parent/adult or left to work with Makerspace staff and volunteers. All children must be picked up by 7:50 p.m.

Do you miss watching your home videos? Join us for this one-hour class and learn how to digitize your home videos at the SPL Makerspace. Following class participants can book time to start their own digitizing projects.

applique

Applique is a fun and unique way to personalize your clothing. In this beginner class, participants will observe the process of applique with our embroidery machine. No prior sewing or embroidery experience is required.

During this 2-hour class, you will learn how to create a design that will be engraved onto a bamboo lid. We are calling it the Giving Dish, but you can design the lid as you like. The round dish is glass and the lid is bamboo.
